One comment I was able to skip steps 7 - 11, then I removed the 5 screws holding the logic board in. I recently got a replacement and (knock on wood) have been very happy with it. I have iPhone 3G It worked for me too..!! There is a rubber gasket between the silver front bezel and black display assembly.
