Either the apple would just never after waiting for over a minute, or the ipod would turn on while I was still holding the two. Also, it looks like you have a connectivity issue. Use an original Apple cable. Test with a different, known-good 30-pin-to-USB or Lightning-Connector-to-USB cable, if available.

It turns out this lets you specify where the photos will be imported to. Numerous installs/uninstalls of iTunes did nothing to fix the problem. But there is an "!" next to "Apple mobile device usb driver" and I can't seem to solve it.
